For a pantry with a sink, receptacles within 6'-0" of the edge are to be GFCI protected.

Does this measurement go through cabinets, around cabinets, underneath cabinets? For instance a dishwasher, refrigerator, and microwave? For receptacles that are not in direct line of sight of 6'-0", how does this measurement apply?

Thanks

In my opinion, it would be measured around a cabinet, but since the cable can be run behind a refrigerator or free standing appliances that would not count.

I always hear take a 6' string and put one end at the receptacle. If you can run the string over/around/along or strung tight and touch the edge of the sink, it is within 6'. Potentially drilling holes through a cabinet or pretending it isn't there should not be allowed when considering the distance. But it the cabinet has holes in it big enough for a power cord, and you can run that string through it and a 6 foot string hits the sink, then it is within 6'.

Ultimately, the code doesn't define how you measure this, so it up to the inspector.
