In response to jhc.. I agree w/ the installation of tapping the 20 amp ckt and feeding individual gfi devices especially in the location you had mentioned. I was referring to using a gfi device as a feed through to gain protection and then feeding another gfi device and so on.
Thats what i ran into recently(nusance trip)

I have seen it too many times(to save $) where you can protect the circuit through a device which happens to be in a remote location. and the problem occurs 1 story up or somewhere totally obscure which then causes problems and possible hazards for a homeowner or tennant.
