Can someone give me direction on what the code says about lighting located in a work pit in a garage area? The current application has all recepts below grade, GFIC and all conduits including lighting circuits with seal offs to prevent vapors from traveling. Thanks for any insight you may give on this.

GFIC in a garage work pit

I have taken a look at the Article (511.12), my confusion comes from the lighting circuit. It is seperatly switched, above the pit area, the lighting is fluorescent and suitable protected from physical damage, but does it require GFIC protection?

If the lighting is not portable then 511.12 does not apply and GFCI would not be required on the lighting circuit. The more important question is the classification of the pit. Does 511.3(B)(2) or (3) apply? Does 511.3(A)(4) apply? It appears that the pit may be either unclassified, a class 1 division 1 location, or a class 1 division 2 location depending on the type of "garage" this is and whether or not the pit is ventilated. You may need to have a talk with the AHJ to determine the classification of this area. It is possible that you will need to install light fixtures that are suitable for a clasified area.
Again, nothing is ever simple.
