Are standard proximity switches acceptable in a Class 1 Division 2 environment. They would be what I consider "hermetically sealed". Just looking for your opinion.

Thanks in Advance,

Steve Cook
In my opinion, they are suitable for Class I, Division 2.

i do not think they are hermetically sealed but as long as they do not have a hard contact output, I agree they are likely suitable. there are some prox switches that come with relay outputs that would likely be unsuitable.

Hermetically Sealed is a defined term in Section 500.2:

Hermetically Sealed. Equipment sealed against the entrance of an external atmosphere where the seal is made by fusion, for example, soldering, brazing, welding, or the fusion of glass to metal.
Informational Note: For further information, see ANSI/ISA- 12.12.01-2007, Nonincendive Electrical Equipment for Use in Class I and II, Division 2, and Class III, Division 1 and 2 Hazardous (Classified) Locations

Glass enclosed proximity switches are made by fusing the glass around the leads. They are hermetically sealed; trust me.
