... I got called by Steubenville L#246 on Nov 5 and off I went. . I'm working at the Sammis First Energy plant along the Ohio River between E Liverpool and Steubenville.
Welcome to the neighborhood. I'm working at the AEP Cardinal power plant in Brilliant, just south of Steubenville. Fortunately I reside close enough to commute: an hour drive each way.

I was offered work at the Stratton/Sammis plant on the same call. At that time it was for Bechtel, working second shift, 6-10s possibly 7. That was 2 months ago. But I hear there are three electrical contractors doing work up there and some are working 6-10s... but that's just what I hear. I turned down the Bechtel call for this job: day shift!!! scheduled 4-10s w/possible OT... but I've worked 6-10s for all but the first week, last week, and this week as I too am off for Veterans Day (National Maintenance Agreement holiday).

Work here on the FGD (Flue Gas Desulphurization) project of units 1 and 2 is winding down here. The contractor is picking up some other side projects to keep the men working. One is upgrading the SCR system for year-round operation. If the contractor and AEP can muster enough work to last until spring, the FGD project for unit 3 will pick up (structural already in progress) and perhaps I'll be here for a year or more. Otherwise, I might end up at the Stratton/Sammis plant sometime in the next few months!

Best Wishes.

Best Wishes.

Hey, David, I'll surely miss your insight.
Can't help but think how lucky people are with electrical training. A good electrical background, and presto, you're working. Never seen it fail...I, too was a municipal inspector and left for more money in the private inspection business....then left that and fell back on my electrical background.
Good luck to you. Look forward to your return to the forums.

There seems to be a lot of layoffs in the inspection field, I was just talking with a Gwinnett county inspector in Georgia, and they are having major layoffs, he said he may or may not be back to my job site for further inspections.

I worked with a guy that would plan everything down to the last nut and bolt. He got so agravated anytime someone said how lucky he was that he had all of the materials he needed and didnt have to go back to the truck all of the time. I guess thats what I think about luck.

normally he can also available himself of cobra benefits and continue his coverage from a previous employer.

Exactly.

You need to contact your previous employer....I believe that you have 30 days to apply, and can continue your health insurance for up to 18 months.
You must pay the premium...what ever the past employer was (is) paying....maybe a little more.

It's Federal Law....COBRA

I'm home for 2 days and then have to go back until Christmas but I'm going to make this webpost a quick visit because my kids need this time with me.

Absolutely !
Thanks to all of you for your encouragement !
I expected a few people to say, "Thank God we got rid of him !" but I am pleasantly surprised by the response.

The concept of COBRA is great but when they tell you that the payment will run $1100 a month for someone that was just laidoff, how can 90% of the people swing that ? . Why bother offering ?

I'm the exception, in that I was able to step right into a 7-12s job.
"I believe that you have 30 days to apply"
I'm told that I have 60 days to apply which [in my case] goes from Nov 1 to Dec 31. . I can "sit tight" and see if anyone in my family gets seriously sick within that time period. . If someone does, I pay $2200 and the hospitalization is covered. . If noone gets seriously sick, I pay nothing.

I'll end up getting my 400 hours at First Energy Sammis in under SteubenvilleL246 and [thru ERTS money sent back to my home local] get my home local medical coverage started before the COBRA 60day window closes. . I'll hit 400 sometime in Dec and then medical will start on the first of the following month, Jan 1. . So that problem is taken care of.

Sorry about your job loss but congrats on finding another job so quick.

That's a big advantage to being a union journeyman, when all opportunities dry up at home, your local tells you where you need to travel in the country to find work at a high pay scale. . Worse case scenario isn't that bad for a union journeyman.

My situation isn't so much about a job or financial loss. . I'm just "switching" jobs and I'm far ahead financially. . But this is about being away from my family. . Two days ago my wife and I hit our 25th wedding anniversary. . My kids are 15, 13, & 9. . They all miss me and I certainly miss them tremendously. . The 15 straight 12hr working days between Veterans Day and Thanksgiving were 15 straight days without seeing them. . The 26 straight 12hr working days between Thanksgiving and Christmas will be 26 straight days without seeing them.

Maybe we'll end up on the same job at some point. . This 7-12s at Sammis is for Bechtel. . The call I took listed it as 5-10s but when I got there they said it's 7-12s for now. . All we're told so far is that 7-12s will continue until the new plant section is brought on-line sometime in February.

Your Cardinal description sounds the same as Sammis, Flue Gas Desulphurization. . The new Sammis plant section will pump the plant exhaust thru limestone slurry vats to clean 98% of the cause of acid rain from the plant coal furnace exhaust. . I'm told the traditional scubber stacks, that they already had, were not able to clean the emissions nearly as well.

As I'm sure you already knew, Sammis is about halfway between Steubenville and E Liverpool. . About halfway between Sammis and E Liverpool is another project starting early next year. . I believe it's a new coal gasification plant breaking ground. . Who knows. . I might end up there.

I was hoping to get into the GM Lordstown plant early next year. . Altho most guys aren't interested because it's scheduled for only 7-8s, it's only 1 hour from my house and I want to go home. . I would be more than happy with a 5-8s or 4-10s. . But I've heard that the call won't make it into book2 more than just a couple of guys. . Warrens book1 is almost as big as the entire Lordstown call will be.

I'll find a way to get back home somehow. . Hopefully it will be sooner not later.

I'll drop by this site again in another month, on Christmas.

Everybody have a nice holiday season and again THANK YOU to everybody for your words of support !!

Dave,

Doing the right thing is not always easy. I'm sure that your family is very proud of you. I'm also sure that they understand that you're doing what you have to do so that you can continue to provide for them.

Self sacrifice is a noble trait. Whether it's a man having to temporarily leave his family for work in order to take care of them or a soldier that volunteers to put himself in harms way to defend the country that he loves.

My thoughts, prayers and respect go out to you, and all of those like you.

God bless.

As I made my way through this thread, I wanted to reply to it but Bill just stole my words.

Your family will be looked after. You do what you have to do. I think everything happens for a reason. This may bring you something totally unexpected. Good like to you David. You take care.
