Few questions and concerns: Under 680.26(B)(1)(b) it explains how to construct a copper conductor grid for in the conductive swimming pool shell. In it it says if the rebar is encapsulated with a non conductive coating this grid must be installed.

(1) can the grid be attached directly to the rebar system for support?

(2) It says the #8 bare solid copper wire is to be bonded together at all points of crossing with a 12 X 12 perpendicular grid pattern. It doesn't say how each point of intersection is to be connected.

(3) While it may be easiest to just form the grid out of uncoated rebar some problems exist with this type of installation. The rebar is to be connected at points of intersection with a steel tie wire under 680.26(B)(1)(a). Over time, rebar in concrete rusts to possible entire deterioration. How is the grid maintained as a continuous unit if the connections are no longer made?

Thanks in advance for any comments!:)

What we do is roll the grid out 3 foot past the first wall of the pool then from there roll the grid out down the side wall of the next section 3 foot past that side wall of the pool an continue around that way then come back an use approved split bolts at each corner of the pool to connect the sections together then attach all the metal parts - jumpers to the grid then #8 solid copper back to the pump room.

If I read your post properly it would be more expensive for the pool contractor to continue the steel re-bar from out of the walls of the pool to 3 foot from the walls of the pool all the way around it.

Sorry I just read your post again, you were talking about the re-bar within the shell of the pool.

The pool contractors we work with wire tie each an every cross over section so that any piece of steel that crosses another piece of steel is wire tied , i would assume that if those wire ties ever rusted off that the steel members are still making contact with one another , then # 8 copper is run from the top walls of the shell down to the bottom of the shell an connected there an that is done on 4 sides of the shell , then the other bonding grid is installed outside the walls of the pool.
