what could cause a grounded (neutral) wire to melt at the bus. this was a residence 200a panel
on 120v / 15 a branch circuit. thank you!

Re: ground(nuetral) melting at panel

I have seen it where one neutral wire was so loose that the insulation melted through, and also melted the insulation on the neutral wire that it was touching to the point where the copper conductors were touching.

I would check for corroded connections. Also make a load reading.

Check for this neutral being shared.

could be another breaker on the same phase is using that neutral for its return to the panel, thus overloading it.....

Re: ground(nuetral) melting at panel

...Or could be a miswired Multi-wire circuit where both red and black are on the same leg and the single neutral is returning the current from both wires and adding instead of cancelling.
