great thats what I want to do ,,, iam still creating the ring,, and meeting all the other reguirements,, the reason for this is Iam building my own house and I never liked ground rods ,,, iam trying to eliminate all connections of the grounding outside of the house ,,,

????
:-?

I think you need to explain your purpose of the ground ring to me..... I don't know how everyone else feels.

Hmmm, I wonder if you would still not have to connect them out in the dirt to make a ring that encircles the building?

A continuous loop

I mean if you are that concerned about grounding then install 10 foot roods every 20', why no go for the ultimate and add laterals 100' out from the ring at the 20 foot rod spacings with 4 rods per lateral.

would a ring like brian john describes handle a direct lightning strike? sounds like it would

It would in theory give you a good ground system to start with. What you do with it after that, is what makes the difference.

If you mean will it offer a good, low-potential path to earth as part of a more complete lightning protection system, then yes, possibly. There are other factors at play though such as how good of a conductor the soil is, is all of the electronics equipment bonded to this ground so that there is equipotential differences on all devices, are other near-by ferrous metals bonded to the system, and so on.

Maybe, maybe not. A ground electrode is only a small part of Lightning Protection System.

The impedance of the ground ring has no importance with repect to lightning as lightning will see any ground electrode system as a very high impedence.

I see nothing in the code that requires the ends of the conductor used for the ground ring to be connected together. It can still encircle the building if the ends overlap. Yes, I know that the ends are normally connected together when a ground ring is installed, but there is no code rule that requires this.
