Grounded B phase (corner grounded) 480 question

I've heard that pocos like them because they can use smaller transformers than a wye. Industrial customers like them because of the higher phase to phase voltage. (240 volt deltas vs 208 volt wyes)

Whether or not they can use smaller transformers than a wye is dependent on the load served. If you have a corner ground chances are it is supplying mostly three phase loads, if a significant amount of load might even prefer full delta instead of open delta with all three same size as they would be for a wye system.

If serving mostly 120/240 single phase loads but maybe a limited amount of three phase load as well, that is where open delta comes in handy, they can put a smaller size high leg pot on the bank as it only needs to handle just the one leg of the three phase load. Open delta can also be convenient in remote areas when it comes to how much cable and other materials it takes to build full three phase line to the remote location vs just two legs plus the neutral conductor. Again amount of load factors into decisions though, enough load they may still want all three phases and a full delta or even a wye bank.
