Is it acceptable to lug a grounding and neutral conductor on the same lug within a main panel? If not, what NEC 2002 code section might one find this under?

Re: grounding and grounded conductors on same lug

I think 408.21 just makes it clear that tyou dont put anything but the grounded conductor in the terminal. In other words just the one wire. The last paragraph points you to where you need to be and that is in article 250. If in fact this is a service panel and not a subpanel then it is not only permitted for these conductors to be tied together it is required. You still need to use only one wire on each terminal but for instance say on a service main without a terminal bar you can use indivdual lugs and stack them on a single stud.If there is a terminal bar and it is Identifeid for the use then 408.20 again permits it. Couldnt tell for sure from you post whether you are talking about a main service panel or a sub.rcarrol is dead on in pointing out that you may only have one wire on each lug. A double barrle lug could be used also to tie each of these together where it is required also.

Re: grounding and grounded conductors on same lug

So many residential electricians take the grounded and the grounding conductors and stick both wires under one screw. Because it is required to bond at the main,we shove everything on the grounded bar. Since there is not enouph holes, instead of buying a grounding bar,we double up. I feel there should be a grounding bar standard with every panel, instead of an option to remember to buy it.
408.21 should make this law.

Re: grounding and grounded conductors on same lug

As far as i know one neutral under a lug but manufacturers have panels listed to allow up to 3 grounding conductors(same gauge) under one lug Cuttler Hammer is one.I think homelines are listed as 2 grounding conductors but I may be mistaken.Just got out of the hospital and these happy pills are fogging my head

Re: grounding and grounded conductors on same lug

As others have said; 408.21 covers it.

Re: grounding and grounded conductors on same lug

My understanding is never more than 1 neutral under a screw but 2 of same size ground is ok.
Allen hope your ok

Re: grounding and grounded conductors on same lug

I always do one neutral and about 5or6 gnds of same gauge twisted up so it looks like a #6 bare under same lug and I have never been Knocked down for it.

Re: grounding and grounded conductors on same lug

Jes25 the ground lugs are limited to the # of conductors that may be landed under one lug.I have never seen any listed for 5 or 6 !!!!!!
