I have a steel structure that has six vertical columns with beams connecting throughout. The highest point is 80 feet above ground with three silos that will be placed in the center of the structure. Do I need ground rods placed throughout or will one be sufficient with a ground ring connecting at all the columns with jumpers from the ground ring?

I'd probably want some air terminals on that with separate down conductors for a lightning protection system. As far as your grounding electrode system goes, John has you to a good link.

Youngster, If you have a ground ring with jumpers to each column, I see no need for a groundrod.

It would be good to connect the rebar to the ground ring also. If the 3 silos are metal make

sure the EGC to them is made up real good.

Special care and considerations must be taken when designing grounding and LP systems for silos and other structures greater than 75' (threshold buildings).

I wouldn't feel comfortable answering this question without many, many more details as to what you are trying to acheive.

Youngster I have to agree with Brian on this one. With Silos involved could be very dangerous and explosive. If an insurance company is involved you really do not want to be responsible for this. It would be wise to sub this out to a UL96-A Master Label contractor who specializes in LPS design/build.

If you find a local certified LPI installer, they will usually give you a CAD design free of charge, as long as they are confident that they will actually get to install it when the project gets to that point.
