Retired after 40 years as an electrician.
We bond so that any fault fault can return to the source, exercising the OCPD. It is our safety "lifeline".

Grounding is to limit voltage induced by lightning, line surges, or other unintensional contact with higher voltage lines.

and to stabilize the voltage to earth during normal operation with the latter being its prime objective.
