Grounding electrode conductor question.

When using a #2 ring with 6 ground rods attached for a main grounding electrode does the main grounding electrode conductor need to be larger than #2 ? This is for an 800 amp service fed with parallel 500 kcmils.

The GEC is not required to be larger than the grounding ring. Look at 250.66(C).

No, but I have seen engineers design ground rings with the GEC larger than #2.

You're right. They can design anything they want as long as it meets the code minimum which the NEC is.
