Grounding electrode spacing off a residence

Is there a code stating a particular distance away from a single family dwelling that a ground rod should be placed.

If you are installing a lightning protection system, the NFPA 780 specifies 2'. If it is simply a grounding electrode required by the NEC, it is not addressed.

It is always a good idea to drive it far enough from the house so you don't hit the footing though :)

Ryan, while we are at this, is there anything wrong with drilling through the footings of a dwelling to install a rod? I have done it for houses where they made the footing real extra wide and then backfilled dirt onto it so it would anchor the house to a hillside. The wide footing made it impossible to get anywhere close to the house.
