Grounding of messanger cable

A messenger cable is currently supporting a single phase 240 volt (two wires) lighting load (60 amps).The messenger cable was the grounded neutral on the old 120 volt lighting system.Can I use the messenger as an equipment ground for the light fixtures which are currently ungrounded.

Assuming that you remove it from the neutral buss and tag it to the Equipment Grounding buss.
