You got me I guess I haven't seen any barns attached to houses here in texas. What is he going to his barn from?

Exactly, I think we are discussing a detached building, so why do you think it can't be grounded like a new service with no more information from the OP?

Sorry I was eating dinner with my daughter. With the information given in the op which was lacking which did lead me to question post #2 which led to this discussion which I have already been warned off of by Bob.

Hows that for a run on sentence?

You were correct in pointing him were you did. I was trying to make amends for being a smart a-- by giving the actual text since you said this guy was legit. Not everyone owns a code book nor has the online version. Again I apologise if I was trying to overstep any boundaries.

I learn as much as I can and try to improve constantly. I am just a lowly ME/EC. I have learned my entire life from others and hopefully I always will.

So with that admitted and said how can it be treated as a new service entrance rather then a sub panel at a detached location derived from an original service entrance?

Assuming that there is a cable or pipe somewhat in common with the two structures such as intercom/telephone/waterpipe/gas line etc

Assuming detached barn---From the op's question I would not call these service entrance conductors but rather a feeder. A feeder to another structure would fall under 225.30.

Now 250.32 comes into play and assuming metallic pathway between the structures then the op would need an EGC. He would also have to drive ground rod(s) at the barn. The GEC would be connected to the EGC not the grounded conductor and the grounds and neutrals would be separated.

If there is no metallic pathway then no EGC is needed. I believe this option will not be a choice in 2008 NEC.

Disco is required at barn

I never used the term "treated as a new service entrance" did I?

I said,
With no more information given how do you know it can't be grounded as if it were a service?
which it can be if the conditions of 250.32(B)(2) are met

BTW, I hope the rain will let off soon.

You are correct you did not say entrance

By the way if the rain/flooding doesn't let up!!! My wife gets it next and that would be bad. Because she always wins. So thanks for the venting lol. I still may not win but at least I get to turn the computer off.
