grounds for lighting loads

Hello, I have some well lights to install, 3 lights per tree, 3 trees total, 3 seperated pulls. The load is small 2.5 per tree but the distance is great. I am purchasing 1,000' rolls per tree #8 and my question is can I use #10 for the ground. I'm 90% sure I can but can't seem to locate anything in the code book to help me with this idea. Thank you much. FYI the farthest tree is under 700'

If you are on, for example, a 20 amp branch circuit, and go from a 12 to a 8 for VD, then your ground, starting at 12, would go to an 8 as well.
the ground gets increased in the same proportion as the ungrounded hots.

It is just me or does it seem like most people think that the title of this part of the forum says lighting not lightning?

I never noticed that. Why is lightning paired with power quality?
