Group A through Group D are related to gasses. If Group C motors are designed more stringent (tighter tolerances)than Group D motors is it safe to assume that a Group C rated motor can be used in a Group D environment? If so then why do motor manufactures sell motors with combined ratings of both Group C & D? Is this for clarification purposes or must the motor actually be rated for each group?

Re: Group Designation - Motor Rating

The basic marking rule is found in 500.8(B). Motors installed in Class I, Division 2 locations under 501.125(B) of the 2005 NEC generally fall under 500.8(B) Exception No. 3.

So, motors requiring identification (Division 1) must be marked for each applicable Group.
