Grouping of disconnects for other buildings.

I need to supply a detached garage with 150amp service. Here is my question. The garage is located 6 feet from the existing service. I set up for a heavy up from 200 to 350 with the power company. A dual lug meter allready exists with the 200 amp service for the dwelling. I can't find any codes NOT allowing me to come frome the dual lug meter directly to the garage supplying a 150 amp main breaker panel (means of disconnect nearest point of entry). Keeping in mind the feeder will not be on the load side of the service disconnecting means and it serves a second structure on the same property under one owner (225.30) Can anyone help me understand the code and how it applies to this application. In the past I have come from the meter base with a second set of service conductors to a disconnect next to the service equipment then to the other structure. Keeping my disconnects grouped together (225.34)

Re: Grouping of disconnects for other buildings.

If one disconnect is in the garage and the other is in the dwelling how will you the disconnects be grouped together?

Re: Grouping of disconnects for other buildings.

My point exactly. Is this a violation if I come from the line side of the disconnecting means (meter) outside of the dwelling? 225.30 pertains to load side of the service disconnecting means. (225.33 and 225.34 refer back to 225.30.

Re: Grouping of disconnects for other buildings.

First you'll need to look at article 230 not 225. Start with 230.72(A), this will take you to 230.71, which will take you to 230.40 Exception #3 which describes exactly what you have proposed.

Re: Grouping of disconnects for other buildings.

Hi Before 1999 nec we would group disconnects. In the 1999 Nec 240-21 b 5 outside taps of unlimited length, see if this code section helps you. Neal

Re: Grouping of disconnects for other buildings.

Thank you very much. I read 230 also and I was oblivious to the exceptions. I guess I need to slow down and READ. Again MUCH thanks. Mike

Re: Grouping of disconnects for other buildings.

The grouping of disconnects are only required "at" each building.

When applying 230.40 exception 3 there would not be a disconnect required the house (these conductors do not enter a building) and you would be connecting directly to the meter which is nothing but a wide space in the service entrance conductors, then back underground to the garage.
This would mean you would be running service entrance conductors to the garage then to either a disconnect or a main breaker panel which would be treated just like it was a service which it is, and would require the same code that a main breaker panel in the house would require.

This is a very common install around here. :)

Re: Grouping of disconnects for other buildings.

I agree with Wayne. One piece of property, with two buildings. 230.40 Ex3 is very specific and covers this topic well. I believe the only other hurdle to cover is the municipality and the POCO.

240.21 does not help here, as that is for feeders, not service conductors. I do see a lot of guys try to reference 240.21 when tapping service conductors, they are two different conductors, and different references - see 240.21(D)
