Oh yeah, They come with a lot of the more costly lights. Or some times with a light that has a transformer.

I had hoped that they were starting to fade out.

They sometimes get corrosion at the contact points. Maybe from heat deteriorating the metal.

They don't get hot - they are LED. The issue is extracting an old bulb. The housing is just marginally larger that the bulb diameter so you can't get your fingers round it to twist it.

Why the bulbs fail is another matter. The unit is still in warranty so the supplier sends us replacement bulbs. No questions asked. But it'same removal issue each and every time.

Sounds like a job for a clever suction cup?

On the back of the track head are 2 screws which hold the socket in place. Take those out and it may help you. I have had to do that in the past.

There are no screws on the back. There is no rear access. The wires to the sockets are fed down the metal tubes which perform the functions of a raceway and a supports for each fitting - besides being decorative.
You can just about make them out in my photograph.

They are a common base type for certain halogen lamps here, though you might be seeing more used with LED's then before.

Perhaps some sort of "suction cup" tool to attach to the lamp and use to turn to remove?

Thanks guys - help much appreciated.
I got by this time with parcel tape - and in the process my dog learned a few new choice words..........:D
Definitely a tool for the next time - and I feel there will be a next time.

We have LED lamps everywhere and these are the only failures we have had. In the room that most needs the light and has the highest volume of traffic.......

Red Green would have used duct tape and had that bulb out in no time!!

You could have used a hammer to smash the lamp and then reached in with needlenose pliers to remove the remains. :D
As it happens, my parcel tape pulled off the lens cover. Much more purchase when the smooth part was removed.

Maybe I should market my new, dual purpose removal tool........
