I am going to be installing a customer suppled 13kw guardian generator .Customer will set generator in place I will run factory wire harness to generator make all connections in panel .I will supply a grod and wire to it. I'm not sure what to charge is this a specialty item opinions please I'm in NJ and is new house so i can easly prep for it.
 
I would charge a lot considering they are supplying the generator I would also make clear that I would not be the one to call if the generator fails.
 
A lot depends on how much involvement you have with the total installation. If you're merely doing just what you posted then I would say somewhere between $800.00-$1000.00. However, if you get involved with the start-up, getting it inspected and coming back another day to wait for the inspector, coming back after the plumber has run the gas line (BTW make sure that a 1" gas line is run to the generator with as few elbows as possible), etc. then you'll have to charge accordingly. The whip that comes attached to the generator is about 5'. Make sure the unit is located as far away from the house and any basement windows as possible. Apparently you are not a factory authorized dealer so if you end up with any problems or questions Guardian will not put you through to tech support unless you have a dealer #.

Make sure your customer sends in the warrantee registration. I installed one in December of last year and it threw a rod through the side of the engine in April 08. It took about 3 months to get it straightened out.

If the customer is also supplying a Generac ATS, your probally going to have a problem at some point.

Like what ? Please tell us all. I haven't had any in the ones I've installed but that's not to say that I won't one day. I'd like to know what to expect.

Plungers getting hung up inside the coils, improperly installed factory lugs and poltergeists.

We are a Generac dealer and thinking about getting out of the 40kw and smaller stuff. We have a guy that services them and goes to calls where the genset fails to start on a POCO outage and finds nothing wrong when he tests them???

We used to find the control fuses blown in the transfer switches on ocasion. Generator would start but not shut down. Has not been a problem lately.

Call the local big box store and ask them how much THEY would install it. Then triple the price. Itemize what you are required to do and when it comes to hooking it up tell them the transfer switch wasn't included and is an extra. Whatever you do put it in writing and get it signed.
 
We did them for the big box, they went for $1600, we supplied the battery, and arranged and paid for the gas line install. Big box takes 20% whether the job makes money or not. Then they decided we should do them for $800. Politely told them no thanks. Gas pressure and volume is a big issue with them, The gas meter may have to be upgraded. As Chris Kennedy said, they have issues with the transfer solenoids melting down, phantom no starts, ect. Usually if the unit did not start within the first starting cycle when it was first brought on line, it would be a problem child there on. That being said, we would have no problems with about 80% of the installs. That's with around 250 installs.
 
They putting any AFCI's in these prewired generator transfer panel things now? I try to steer clear of the retail type generators.
