Need help sizing a gutter. I know that 366.22(A) states the 20% cross sectional area of conductors, but the gutter I am installing will only have empty conduits for future use if needed. What I have is 8 1" coming into the bottom and 1 21/2" nipple out of the end into the panel. I am thinking 8 x 8 x 36 what say you? (BTW) The 1" cond. are set side by side with about 1" in between each one

If it's empty pipe, my thinking is that you can do whatever you want to. Who's to say what gauge of wire will go in those pipes later on? You might be in violation when the pipes are filled one day.

That is what I am thinking. But to take this job one step further it is a building for a ball field being built by the county. I have the wiring for the building, another contractor has the ball field lighting. when I was discussing the job with the county maint. manager he stated the ball field lighting service was going to be 480 3ph metered at the transformer 300 ft away and brought into the elect. room for the lighting panel and contacts. The 240/120 1ph service was going to be metered on the side of the building and I bring it in to my panel for the building lighting and gen. use receptacles. When I questioned the fact of two services serving one building his response was " we own the inspection dept." He then said they already cleared it and were going to post signs stating it was served by two services. So I guess all in all if the gutter gets filled one day it wont be a violation even if it is:mad:

I think i would be more concerned about exceeding the 30 conductor count. How many breaker s can fit in the panel?

The difference in price is not very much between a gutter 8"x8"x36" and a gutter 12"x12"x48". Esspecially if you are only purchasing one.
Availability might be a problem if you get a wierd size. Order it a week or so in advance. 8"x8" is common so is 12"x12". Any thing else might have to be "made to order." $100. -$180 is what you should expext to pay.

I would think that, presuming the pipes are symmetrically laid out, meaning only 4) 1" pipes on each side, that a 4X4 trough would suffice, so anything larger would be for convenience.

Note to Bob: No, I haven't done the math. This is just a WAG. ;)
