Hi, I'm an electrical engineering student working on a project to prepare the hazardous area classification for a jetty over the ocean which is approximately 80 feet from well-maintained pipelines carrying fuel oil. I am required to specify the classification for the electrical equipment (lights, electrical panels, cables, conduit, receptacles, etc.) that will be installed on the jetty.

Can you refer me to a standard which can be used in preparing a HAC drawing for this application? The API RP 500 does not seem to cover jetties.

Thank you.

Since this appears to be a class assignment, I’d first refer your research to NEC Section 500.4(B).

I will tell you that API RP 500 and NFPA 497 are both quite sufficient to classify a location “…which is approximately 80 feet from well-maintained pipelines carrying fuel oil.” (A specific reference to a “jetty” is a red herring to a more general solution)

You may find some additional conceptual help in Article 515, specifically Figure 515.3 and NFPA 30.
