In order to show just how bad he could be, he did not have a bender and/or a proper fitting and/or a transition fitting for EMT=to-PVC.

Pierre that's just what you can see. If I know hacks and I have seen the work of a few. There is #14 Ga. romex pulled in the conduit ( with a couple of splices) and it's protected by a 50 Amp breaker ( that will keep it from tripping ) and the ground has been cut short ( who needs a ground). There is normally about three feet of Romex in the panel with the sheath still on and there is never a connector used. The Romex is probably streached across the ceiling grid ( above suspended ceiling and isn't strapped) and has a couple of flying splices for good measure. There is at least 10 feet of extra cable rolled up in the ceiling.

It's as if there is a contest to see how many code violations they can get on one home run and still get the equipment to magically work.

This guy may not win the contest but should at least get an honorable mention.:grin:

I would think you love to get these jobs. It's up to you to find everything possible. Horrible hack jobs need to stop. It puts people in danger and also takes work from real professionals.

Come don't you even grin a little when you put the smack down on a hack?:D

Well I might grin a little. :D

Had a guy one time replace 10 A/C units on the roof of a building. I looked at the first one and wrote a three page correction notice (8 1/2 x 5 1/2 paper) the last correction on page three read X10. I just couldn't believe what I was seeing and he seemed very surprised that I wasn't signing it off.

I was once told by a psycologist that it is a proven fact that incompetent people usually do not know that they are incompetent and actually think higher of themselfs than competent people do of themselfs. So a hack doesn't always know he's a hack. The guy who ran that pipe probably thinks he was pretty clever.

Have you never seen a hack with a License? Will a License stop a hack from hacking? Are unlicensed Elctricians working for a Licensed Contractor also hacks? Jails are full of licensed people that didn't do the right thing.

The only thing I see wrong with this fine installation of electrical equipment is that their wasn't any duct tape used where the metal connects to the PVC. :-? No one tought that person about waterproof connections (or anything else for that matter). My guess would be a weekend worrier or some one took training at the "Do It Your Self Seminars" you know, the same place that says "We Install Everything Electrical";)

Take your pick

Take your pick

Looks like a recent install from the looks of that shiny coupling. Aside form bending the pipe over his knee and improper fittings what would you say is the biggest no-no? (That can been seen) Subject to phisical damage? Emt not suitable because of corosion?

Yes but I think the license you are talking about is a driver's license.

I have never known of an electrical contractor ( licensed ) being sent to jail for hack work. There are some that have their license suspended or revoked but going to jail just isn't that common. The only contractors that I have known of going to jail were for tax evasion, non-payment of child support and DUI or drug possession.

A license doesn't stop hacking but it does slow it down quite a bit. Most contractors have to much of an investment in their business to take a chance doing hack work. They know that they will not only lose their license but their livelihood . That's the real threat when a license is required, the threat to take away one's means to earn a living. That can be a pretty big stick when compared to the carrot of a few bucks in cash.

Most of the unlicensed hacks don't make their living doing electrical work ( it's just a side venture ) so they don't have near as much to lose. If they were going to make their living doing electrical work they would take the time and effort to get a license and start a legit business.
