Red heads are a fairly recent item and I am fairly certain that cable predates them.

Thats TW insulated wire. They started using that in type AC probably in the 60's. They had red-heads before that with the old R and RH insulation.

See the empty round hole just under the middle black wire? That's the unused half of one of two BX clamps.

I've seen red heads in wiring dating back to the 1920's.

The old red heads were a hard preformed paper type, not the modern plastic ones.
