What articles address HACR breakers, under what circumstances can they be used and not used? I read that they are for " group applications " like HVAC units to protect both the large compressor motor as well as the smaller fan motor. But I need as detailed information about them as you can help me with. Thanks

Article 240 Part VII deals with circuit breakers.

Here is a quote from the 2006 UL white book on HCAR breakers:

43. HACR Type ? A circuit breaker that has been found acceptable for use in heating, air-conditioning
and refrigeration equipment comprising group motor installations is marked ?HACR Type? in conjunction
with the UL Mark. This marking alone, however, does not indicate the acceptability of the circuit breaker in
these installations. For an acceptable installation, the end-use equipment must be marked to indicate that
?HACR Type? circuit breakers may be used for branch circuit overcurrent protection. The 2005 NEC permits
the use of any inverse-time type circuit breaker in heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment
comprising group motor installations.

Back in the mid 80's (?) UL changed their testing procedure with the end result that today all "new" multi-pole breakers are automatically HACR rated.

Thanks, Ryan. I was just about to ask. I'm curious to read whether the standard was changed such that the existing CB's could miraculously become HACR rated, or whether they changed the CB's somehow to make they now dual rated. I have a feeling the standard changed, and not the CB's, which is a shame. Of all the smoked CB's I change, the lion's share do HACR duty.

In the old days there was a separate UL test and listing for HACR breakers. Now that exact procedure has been included as part of the standard breaker test. So, an "old" style non-HACR breaker would have had to be changed so that it could pass the HACR portion of the current UL489 standard.

Off topic a little.
It would be nice if Underwriters Laboratory would permit Inspectors to have access (even if it is only online) to the standards. Inspectors/inspection entities do not have the $$$ to spend on the high cost of these standards.

can a hacr breaker be used for the main breaker inside of a standby generator unit? unit came with that type of breaker.
