Suppose there is a JB in the ceiling over the tile where your toggle bolt was installed. Now you can't take the tile out. Again Bad idea...
Suppose there was no toggle, but there was trak...you can open the tile and that's about it.

celt,

haven't you realized yet that no matter how you do something, there is some piece of information out there that says don't do it that way?

i'm not even kidding. probably 60% of manufacturers installation instructions go against manufacturers instructions for other products used in the installation.

yet, every day we do installations that last 20 yrs or more.

I don't think there is a person on this board that has ever done a 100% code compliant installation if more than 3 parts were involved. That definitely includes me. There are too many codes and you can't help but violate some. Is it a dangerous installation? usually not. but, a sharp inspector, going by the book, can ding you.

it's getting too damn complicated:)

I would suggest that everyone needs to look at 410.16 (C) as to whether or not it is allowed to hang a fixture from a ceiling tile. Methinks NO.

I do not believe that to be true as long as you use the IDS style clips.

We use #12 steel tie wire for the support to the structure.

Now if you used these type "Twist On" Fixture Support I believe you would need other support.
I just had to Google 'IDS clip'. Pretty neat. Never seen or used them before. I was talking about the twist on type, which is what I normally observe in use.

thanks bob!
the one's with the studs look real handy for clearing the dropped tiles in the reveal edge ceilings

Notice that you can get optional barrel nut for dropped ceiling tiles.

Click on the link again and look at figure 4.

Once you get the right size hardware for the track and barrel nut you can move right along.

It is also very secure. the Tommy Hilfiger job I did used 70 watt Metal halide track heads every 18", with the ballasts the weight really adds up fast.
