I have been invited to bid on a small job for the TSA at a small airport. I'm guessing it will be a half day job. Now normally I would have no problem pricing this, but since it involves state and federal agencies, I have no idea what to expect for paperwork requirements, security checks, prevailing wages, etc.....

Has anyone had experience with this and all the hidden things needed to complete the work and get paid?

If the work is air-side, expect to spend all day there and then some. The bid invitation should contain all the info you need. At a minimum it should contain the contract Point-of-Contact (POC). The POC should be able to answer these questions.

I and understand what your saying, but I may not even ask about something that impacts the job because I am not aware to look out for it. That is why I am asking those who have gone thru the process what to expect. The work is on the security side of the TSA area.

This is why I suggest you talk to your POC. There will be things like background checks and vehicle information that will be needed before you even show up. If you are a sub to another contractor, make sure they understand that failure to provide you the necessary information will result in chargeable delays. You might have some luck starting here.

Not always a background check.
Here they called it a green card, after the color of the green ID received after background checks.
The rule is the person with clearance needs to be an escort in sight of the others without background checks.
There is a max number that can be escorted per cleared person. I want to say 7.
The cleared person does not necessarily need to work for your company.
It could be a TSA. Or person from a company involved. Such as as TWA security if your working on TWA's hanger.
Also seen private security companies offer a cleared person to watch your uncleared person, with a charge for that service.
The catch is if you only have 1 escort, everyone needs to go in a group.
That means group restroom visits, material runs, etc.
In a public site it's probably not possible to secure the tools and work area with only 1 escort.

all the mind numbing stuff for half a days work?
me, i'd pass on it, unless there was the possibility of steady work coming from it.

one of my closest friends is a foreman at LAX, working on their remodel. he's been
there for years. NOTHING in a TSA secure zone takes half a day.

i'd call it $1,950.00 plus the material cost marked up 50%.
that is for one guy, 4 hours work.

Dont expect any special treatment. I tried showing my electricians card to TSA in an attempt to get some crimpers thru - NADA  Hold on, who hooked up that conveyer and metal detector for you??
I seem to recall you telling that story - but you were a passenger wanting to take that tool on a flight weren't you?
