I have a splice kit intended for repairing a floor heater which is embedded in mortar. Does anyone know if the code allows splicing a cable, then embedding the splice in mortar? It's neither accessable nor in a pull box.

Re: Heated Floor Repair

I saw a show on them not too long ago. The only way to repair it is to replace it. :(
They are supposed to last a long time though.
Just curious, What caused the damage?

424.40 Splices Embedded cables shall be spliced only where necessary and only by approved means, and in no case shall the length of the heating cable be altered.

Re: Heated Floor Repair

Out of my own curiosity I looked at 424.40. Talk about vague. I would guess that the Local Inspector would have to provide guidance on this one.

One without a code book on his desk. :) Actually I work in heating and am a Mechanical Engineer.

Re: Heated Floor Repair

May we presume that the repairs will be performed by a qualified person (i.e., electrician)? If not, if you are doing your own repair work, then we cannot provide any further assistance.

Please let me invite your attention to the following statement on the home page of this Forum:

This NEC? Forum is for those in the electrical and related industries. Questions of a "How-To" nature by persons not involved in the electrical industry will be removed without notice.

Re: Heated Floor Repair

Not to worry. I am not doing this repair. I am involved in designing new products and was trying to get as preliminary reading on what is legal and possible. Any product I work on will also have a qualified Electrical Engineer and will go through UL approval.

At the risk of sounding defensive, I was using the forum to understand how to do things right - legal and safe.

And you are most welcome to do so.

But I hope you will understand that we must take care not to provide assistance to non-electricians who intend to perform electrical installation work at their own homes. Our concern is that thay may only get answers to the questions that they ask, and get no answers to the thousand other questions that they should have asked, but did not know that they needed to ask.
