Where is a residential heater cut off switch - the one with the red plate - required to be located? I cannot find it in the NEC, but have asked colleagues and the best I have heard is "at the lowest occupied level", but I haven't found reference to it. Is this in the IBC, IRC, NFPA codes?

A few questions first: What state are you in? What is the fuel being burned?

As Bob said in Massachusetts it's a requirement for oil burners.

In RI the requirement reads (paraphrase off the top of my head): "Every furnace and boiler shall have a remote shutoff. Location approved by the AHJ." Translation: They could require it just about anywhere, but generally it's at the top of the basement stairs, or outside of the attic door if the furnace is in the attic.
