When is hospital grade cable used in lieu of mc type cable, in a doctors office and examination room.I have a project in which existing doctors offices are being renovated with new fixtures and adding receptacles as needed.
From What I'M READING IN ARTICLE 517: only patintent care and special equipment needs the redundant ground.

Patient Care areas, which exam rooms would fall under.

Agreed.

Welcome to the Forum veno. Here is some commentary that follows 517.13 in the Handbook.

The wiring method provisions of 517.13(A) apply to the branch circuits in areas used for patient care and are not limited to patient rooms. Additional areas, such as examining rooms, therapy areas, recreational areas, solaria, and certain patient corridors, are also included.

Thanks. So do you agree:

1. The existing MC cable is OK for the luminaires if above 7.5 ft and the switch is 6 ft from the examining table.

2. All receptacles need to be hospital grade with AC or hospital grade type cable.

1. yes
2. yes

Sorry to disagree Pierre but, it's no and no.

Exception #2 does not change the requirement for the metallic sheath to be a recognized EGC, it allows for it to be the sole EGC so MC could not be used however, plain AC could.

The receptacles would not need to be HG unless the the exam rooms are classified as Critical Care areas or the patients will be sleeping there.
