I'm in anne arundel county md. I have been searching for info on doing a heavy up but have been limited to the info available. I probably could call old ken the aaco inspector but he would just give me a lot of grief. I did look online at bge and they just reference a plan submittal and then go to the planning and zoning for a permit. I was wondering if anyone had like a step by step process for this info. I have also done a web search and have found similiar info.

also a code question;

I am relocating a 150a panel and upgrading to a 400a service. the current panel is on the first floor in the front of the house. I am relocating the new service to the back of the house on the same wall but in the basement. I was going to place the new meter can in the same vicinity of the existing and run the load side se cable down along the side of the house until I can penetrate the block wall. my question is, does this wire need to be in pipe?
I would believe for safety reasons that it should but have not seen as to where it is mandated.

thanks alot, Big Joe

I know of no requirements for the SE to be sleeved in pipe. I've had inspectors request it "for safety". I don't see a problem with it exposed; that's what its made for.

No, it's extremely dangerous. It should be banned. ;)

Might try "Electrical Service Upgrade"....

I only got around to ever hearing this term "Heavy Up" recently here on the forum.... After about 18 years of doing them....

If this is a nice home and most homes that get a 400 Amp service are pretty nice. Think about what all these cables are going to look like before installation. I may have the wrong picture of this installation but I see ugly. On a nice home I try to do a job that will look as good as posssible. Many times this requires a bit of trenching for an underground service and get a close as possible to the wall penetration ( Some like the ability to hide meter and disconnects behind a wall or bushes). Believe me the one thing that most people don't want to see is either cable or conduit running around the house if it can be avoided. They are willing to pay more on a high dollar home to aviod this.

The best place to start with an upgrade to a 400 amp service is the power company.

The first thing you need to do is fill out the BGE application for service with the increased loads, a site plan sketch. Then a designer will call you after a week or two to discuss your job. BGE will tell you where they will let the meter be located. This is not a quick process so I hope you are not in a hurry.

I have sent digital pics instead of the site plans and sketches, but you need to have a contact.

Where is this job in AA?

It must be protected only if subject to physical damage. The inspectors here require protection by sidewalks etc.
