I don't know for a distribution panel in a residence, but for loadcenters or panelboards the max. height would be 6 1/2' , unless the equipement is larger than 6 1/2" and then the larger height would prevail.
An exception to to the rule is existing conditions.

Actually it is 6'7" with some exceptions, see 240.24

The height was changed from 6'6" to 6'7" to conform to the metric standard of 2 meters.

I always wondered why the 6" or 7" but I guess it makes sense now, seeing we are all using the metric system here in the good old usa.:rolleyes:

I just installed a panel today in which the top most breaker was at exactly the NEC max of 6' 7". I told myself that I should have taken a picture!

I don't know how many of you guys carry a camera on your truck, but I sure do. If you do much service, you can find at least one thing every day to take a picture of. The beauty of some of these forums is the interesting pictures that some guys take. I take at least two or three a day. Even if you're an employee, it only takes a minute to snap a picture of something interesting, and your boss shouldn't have any problem with that. Particularly since it goes towards the furtherence of your education.

I have a good digital camera, but I don't know how I can post or tranfer them to the forum. Also, I have 3 pictures from India -someone emailed them to me - that I would like to share with the forum, but I don't know how to forward them. Any ideas? Louis

It's also good when you need to document changes, or when your installation has been damaged, and you can send pictures with the bill. :D
