Re: Help to make this code forum better - from MHE Director

How about a "Tricks of the Trade" forum?
We could share ideas that make our line of work either easier, more safe, less expensive, faster, better or more efficient.
For instance...I'll never forget the time (around 1988?!?) someone showed me how to fish a conduit using a shop vac, string and the sandwich baggie from their lunch! What would have taken me 5-10 minutes (per pipe) of screwing around with a rusty old 200' metal fish tape only took about 1.5 seconds! :D I remember for a joke I threw the fish tape into the trash while mumbling something like...."Well, we Won't be needing that anymore"!!!

One idea: several posts have links to excellent graphics and pictures. I'm concerned about the usefullness of those posts should something happen to the linked sites, like an account goes offline or a host changes. Then the threads would have bad links/no graphics. A storage area on this server/site would preserve the graphics and pictures for our kids and grandkids (I'm sure the forum will still be here and just as useful to them). Moderatrors discretion as to which pics/files to archive with the threads. A sketch tool on the site might be useful for those without drawing tools.

The forum is pretty danged good just the way it is. About the most useful place on the net...

I like the idea about having a drawing program tied to the forum as well as the ability to store photos (hard drive space is not prohibitive anymore). I am having a hard time with the "how to" section though. How can you have that and keep the DIYs out of it? :D

Have only accepted members be able to access it the same way regular members cannot access the move to forum's

Ok how do we determine who's able and who's not. If we can tell who's a DYS then it's easy but maybe a test, back ground check,?????

Is it possible for a numbering system to be applied just for the original post? I try to visit this site as often as I can. I have certainly learned much. Sometimes I have wanted (needed) to go back to a previous post to show someone.

I agree with "hbliss"

I would like to see them "tightened up" to more accurately describe the occupation of someone in this trade.

Please no Fees. I seem to pay a fee for everything else worth having no a days.

Lady spark's lover
No e-mail address's should ever be put on a public forum or any board for that matter as there are e-mail harvester's out there that just love to grab address's to spam to, or send virus's to. We went through this in the old forum. as there was a few that got virus's from this. remember all web pages are stored on your hard drive and any one who opens a page with a e-mail address in it and then gets a virus some virus's will search the hard drive and use these address to send itself to.

Lady, you can have the e-mail address of just about anyone you want just by asking in a PM. That way, you e-mail address is not exposed to the world. I have given my e-mail address to a few people and except for a couple, am willing to give it to anyone.

Send me a PM with your e-mail address and I will return you mine. I just do not want my e-mail address exposed to mining. :D

Mike may or may not be willing to host a set of email accounts. But that would not solve the problem that Wayne and ?the other Charlie? have described.

How about a place that contractors can post when man/women power is needed. or job opening's. It doesn't nessarly need to be in the forum but it would be nice to have a place to post job opening's with location's of course.

Just a thought ;)

Not necessarily, It can just have a place to list the job opening and the vital info like job description, experience required. and contact info like the company name, phone #, address.
It could be kept very simple but would be a nice way to share labor when work is slow for one company but another has to much work and need's a little more help even if it's temporally.
