sorry it was incomplete!
I meant the egc that goes from my main disconnect to the grounding rods

depends on jurisdition and feed the ground wire size that was in accordance to 250.66 (For possible incoming feeder.!/2 mile away 400A used-#4 (we that don,t use #6 t all )

You are correct that a #6 is the largest size conductor that is required to a ground rod. Some jurisdictions enforce a physical damage requirement to this conductor so they only allow #4 or larger. Here in NJ your #6 is fine.

So what ever would damage #6 would not damage #4. That makes no sense.

to size grounding electrode conductors to electrodes other than ground rods (& concrete encased)such as building steel & water lines; and to size service bonding jumpers.

I always use #4 to avoid enclosing gec in raceway. Can anyone define physical and severe physical damage as stated in 250.64b?
