HID Ballast Wirng

I recently started working at a facility where the ouside lighting is supplied by many 480 volt HPS fixtures. We have recently purchased a quantity of Sylvania LU400/Super5-kit ballasts which are a multi-tap ballast. The primary side has connection wires for whatever voltage you're selecting (120/208/240/277/480), in addition to a common. Included in the kit are a cap and an igniter. These are new to me and I'm not sure how to wire for 480 volt. One leg (240 volts) of my 480 goes to the 480 volt tap. Does the other leg of my 480 (also 240 volts) go to the common? That doesn't seem right to me. Can anyone help with the answer?

Sorry this is so long...

Thanks

Re: HID Ballast Wirng

Dan,
Generally these fixtures have taps with the voltage ratings that you've mentioned. The rating is for varying voltages with regard to the common in the fixture ballast compartment. So a 120 volt branch circuit would connect to the common and 120 volt tap, a 208 volt to the common and 208 tap etc. In your scenario the 480 would connect to the common and the 480 volt tap. Be sure to safe off all of the other taps that aren't used.
