Some of our maintenance people have the idea that a fixture rated at 250 watts hps means they can put anything under 250 watts in that fixture. I have always put in what the fixture was listed as, if it was a 150 watt mh fixture this is what i put in. Does anyone have the correct answer to this ?

I hold to the engineered manufacturer's instructions for HID. I don't put pulse start lamps in regular ballasted lums and I do not put 250W lamps in place of 400's or vice versa even if the lamps will burn for years in this manner.

The best analogy I can think of for defending this preference is to think of this:

If you have a 250 horsepower engine and you put a 100 horsepower transmission in it, will it push you down the road? for how long?

Is it worth it to climb back up to the fixture when the oddball combo doesn't work out?
