We call them halfbacks here, Florida is too hot for them, so they move halfway back to the mountains. If I had a dollar every time I’ve heard “that’s the way we do it up north” LOL!

Utilities also tag red, white, blue for phases....

That was used around me for medium voltage when I started in the 70s. It was also the colors of the leads on the first phase rotation meter I used.

Some local jurisdictions require or required purple for the high leg. San Francisco might be one.

Yup, still does, in their local ammendments. Spottily enforced though, I've seen both orange and purple.

My favorite was when they used gray for the hi leg in a facility that has 4 other systems; 208Y120, 240/120 Delta, 480Y277 and some 120/240 single phase and some sort of 120 DC.
And the 480Y277 uses light 'natural gray' as a neutral.

Just keep a good meter with ya is all I can say.
