History Please - Taps ahead of Mains for Emergency Lights

There is actually a subtle point here. It is not the range equipment that is on this disconnect, it is the control (coil) voltage that is on it. Doesn't make much sense since there would be powered to control, if the main was off.

I didn't read your original post carefully enough, apologies. But you make a good point. This is why, if the opportunity presents itself, we'll tap the power for a shunt coil or similar usage from the same circuit feeding the kitchen equipment. I won't swear the techs have always confirmed that you can double-tap said breaker; what you don't know, etc.
 
I have seen the shunt trip power supplied by same source as the emergency lighting. The reasoning, I was told, was to prevent the shunt trip power form accidentally being turned off if it was in a "general" panel.
