there may even be a permit that you are not aware of.
One of my first jobs (not my very first one because I was more careful with that one) after I became a contractor was near the edge of the city limits. I obtained a city permit, another contractor correctly obtained a county permit. The homeowner was mainly the one at fault in this case, trying to hire whoever could do it cheapest regardless of permits. But it was also my fault for applying for a permit from the wrong jurisdiction, and the city's fault for granting me a permit for a site not even in the city limits. The county inspector was pretty upset when all this first came to light (around the time of the final electrical inspection). The city eventually ended up refunding me the entire cost of the mistaken permit, even though they had sent an inspector and approved the job at the rough-in stage.

I like it here where when you pull a permit in a city they have the lot number associated with the permit so if the lot number is out of city limits its stopped right there. The state permits don't do this so you always check first with the city then pull the state permit.

So just an update they cashed my check for the remainder of the deposit and I haven’t heard from them again. I drove by on my way to a nearby job and saw the service that the other guy did is completely gone. So even after that they had to change course. I had a 3 gang setup around the corner from the original service and this guy kept the original service and added disconnects to it. So when I drove by I saw that his original service with added disconnects was gone and I saw a triplex running back to the area that I had spec’d out putting the new 3 gang setup. It appears that was all a waste for them and they should have just let me do my thing.
