My guess is that the home-horror stores require their subs to carry liability insurance with a "hold harmless" clause in it, relieving them of any responsibility in such matters.

How can you be "held harmless" for a code breach? Writing some junk doesn't remove "any" legal obligation or requirement.

Can I write somewhere that it's not my responsability if I use 14 AWG for a 20 amp circuit?
