HOme Depot Installations...

I heard on the news yesterday that Home Depot is going to cut way back on their installations. They have had too many complaints and run-ins with building departments.
The funny part is, they are going to refer the same installers they use to hire, Home Depot will only supply the material.

Most of the Home Depot jobs we see in this area are for windows, doors, and shutters. We have not had too many permitting or installation problems that I am aware of...

Bryan
We also see those types, along with decks, kitchens, baths and basements.

I am aware of an installation by Home Depot where they renovated the entire house...pulled no permits. The contractor who Home Depot hired told the licensing board that Home Depot was exempt from permits. That put up red flags through the County...that also cost Home Depot $15,000 in fines.

And why, pray tell, would HD be 'exempt' from needing permits?

this guy confirms my theory that brains are not required to become a contractor...

In my neck of the woods, a person does not require any licensing to become a GC. Just $500 for the yearly sticker and whatever the minimum insurances necessary.

I once knew a painter who built a closet. He thought it was so easy, he hung a shingle as an EC...His first job, the roof on the house collapsed.

If the contractors were properly vetted ( and perhaps neutored or spayed ) then it would be such a bad idea.

Little play on words there.

Are you being serious? $500 and you get to build a house? Does this apply to commercial also? Here we have builders and GC's.

Its the same here in Maine...except you don't need the $500

Licensing is pretty much a joke every where, here many dont even have a green card. The workers themself usually have no license and many GC bypass pulling permits.Surprised home depot ever got involved in this mess. All licensing has ever done is run the price up.Now if we inforced permitting and hired qualified men then maybe something could change.

Well in backward old South Carolina, you at least have to have someone with an existing license to vouch that you have 1 years experience in the home building trade. You also have to pass an 7 hour open book test. (That fun PSI test had multiple errors in it, but that is another story) The electrical test was a bit more straight forward. The GC test is a bit harder, and not as easy to get to take, but can be had. I guess we are not as bad off here as I thought we were.

Oh, the Home Depot pricing here is very high relative to the market. However, most companies do not offer 1 year no interest or finance charge.

Jim,
Licensing is very tough in Florida, GC exam takes two days, EC is very tough, qualifications just to sit for the exam and the almost year long process is a killer.
Is it really that lax on the west coast?

The part i am refering to is the master EC .He can hire anyone he wants without them having any test. This lets him find cheap labor.Other trades are the same.I passed my EC in collier county back in 97.Test was long but not really hard,2nd try and i passed. Are they requiring you over there to hire any journeymen to greenie ratio ? Here it could easily be a kid right out of high school. And we see many illegals working and nothing happens.
