yet you have to have a couple/few inches above grade to attach the wire?
That's the whole point of this thread, the connection does not have to be above grade or accessible.

So what then is the purpose of an 8 ft ground rod, if you need all 96 inches of it to be below grade, yet you have to have a couple/few inches above grade to attach the wire?

you dont have to pay for that extra 2ft of rod, and you bang it down just below grade, clamp it, bury it.
