Didn't your SeeSnake come with the three tips, one of which is a hook?

Now, if it's a hard pull, your method is a great idea.
 
Ok - two of my favorite homemade work tools.


My (ring-roller) monorail bender does any radi constistantly end to end. Made from scrap metal laying around the garage, some casters, and vise that I over torqued one day.

The next is a recycled tool case as lap-top case - my previous one was a Dewalt case - then that computer died and I needed a new one (Bigger didn't fit) - so this Hilti case took its place.

All I got is a 15' brass chain I use to fish down uninsulated walls. I like the magnet and steel set up shown.

I have done quite a few recess can installs in a finished ceiling with no access above. I always hated drilling blind through ceiling joists. In order to fish I would be at one hole where a 6" recess would go, probing a #12 or #10 wire with a hook on the end. My partner would be at the other recess hole doing the same thing. We would feel for the wires to touch and hook them together.

I may try the magnet and steel trick next time I have to do a job like this.
 
I dont know if this would be considered a home made tool. When I drill through a soffit and roof I use a standard hole saw. For the pilot bit I use an 18 in bit, grind a flat spot in it and install it in the arbor. As you drill up from the bottom the tip of the pilot will go up through the roof. Finish cutting the hole in the soffit. Go on roof and find piolt hole and drill through the roof from above. This method work well for me.

Now that I look at that again that was a waste of a post, mods, please deduct 1 post from my tally.

I guess my point was that we use homemade tools too, couldnt live without them.
 
The first job I had as an apprectice I worked for this old timmer that swore that electricians didn't need a hammer.
Long story short my dad took a 10" cresent wrench ground down the end of the handle and welded on the head of a ball peen hammer. I still have that and use the heck out of it

Your ring-roller - what size of pipe do you use it on?
I'm assuming you use it on pipe...
The hilti case is sweet... Good cover up for thefty eyes too.
