Recently ran across an older Eaton ATS/load center. Had the 240v sensing wires and 2 low voltage transfer terminal blocks. Long story short it didn’t have the normal T1 terminal for battery charger. Genartor is a honey well older model as well. My question is to get a 120v to the battery charger, I should jumper of normal power load side correct this way there is always 120v going to battery charger?

Have you verified that it does not in fact have battery charging currently?

You can’t tap the utility feed for a battery charger, because as soon as you have utility power loss, you lose battery charging. After about a day or half day, the generator quits. I’ve revamped a few of these, mostly Kohlers, where the installer didn’t understand that.

Yes, if the generator is not running, the battery will discharge. Loss of utility sense automatically starts the generator. If the generator does not start, the battery will eventually die.

Like most generators, there is an onboard alternator that keeps the battery charged when the generator is running.

I know new Generac/Honeywell and Kohler don’t have alternators. All battery charging is from the AC side.

How long ago were they putting alternators in generators? I don’t have a ton of experience with older units.

This is how I had to do a Kohler the other day. No good place to pull a charge circuit, so I had to install a 125 amp panel for a single 20A charge circuit. 😡

The water cooled (residential) Kohlers I put in have breakers built into the transferswitch for the charger and block heater. The Cummins/Onan air cooled I have to get a circuit from the panel or mount a fuse block in the transfer switch if that’s not an option.

I think there is a breaker kit available for that ATS but we just put one of those black Bussman cigar fuse holders and a 15 amp cigar fuse in the ATS somewhere convenient.

You definitely picked hard mode there.

The old boxy tan ones had an additional winding on the generator that put out about 19 volts AC and powered the on board battery charger via a relay when it was running.

When it was not running, the battery charger 19 volts AC came off a transformer from N1/N2.

When the ones with a display appeared, they had a black brick battery charger. The Nexus had a battery charger built in the controller.

Yeah I know. 😂

I tried to find an online fuse and fuse holder, and no one had it locally. Also, I’m not sure if those lugs are approved for two wires. I’ve seen a lot where the installer just added a #12 solid under the customer feed lug with an inline fuse. It works fine, just not sure if it’s approved.

I install for a local Kohler and Generac dealer here, and many times they call me after they have already sold a unit and ATS to a customer. If they had called me earlier, I could have spec’d different products and made it easier on myself. Oh well.

I know some of the Kohler ATS have breakers for the charger and heater, and I asked them to start selling those ones. We’ll see how it goes. 👍
