If you use a Square D Home Line or QO Main Lug panel you can use a back feed main breaker in it with the hold down clip and place a second two pole breaker sized for the generator next to it. Then get the transfer device KIT (QO DTI) that prevents both breakers from being on at the same time. The panel must be rated for use as service equipment.

Wayne I have 1 of those homeline generator panels sitting in the shop for an install monday.
On the label it is listed as a grnerator transfer panel ? Isn`t this panel listed as service equiptment.Don`t have the catalouge # on hand.But from what I have gathered from this thread as long as it is listed as service equiptment and there is an OCPD weth a locking clip all is good :D

Ed, Ed, Ed, Let me up!!! (Nice diagrams!! Where do you come up with these things? Make 'em yourself?)

I was not clear at all that with the solid neutral transfer switch, you do not "properly ground" the generator. Since it is BONDED back to the normal service though the equipment grounding conductor, a second ground connection is not permitted where a second neutral is a created at the emergency source. That's what I meant by the statement of having the ground reference at two places.

Many times an unswitched neutral transfer switch shows up and you HAVE to connect the beast. But they have different grounding characteristics than the separately derived system which I prefer for the previously stated reasons.

I guess that what I meant by properly grounding anything is to understand what exactly you are dealing with and trying to accomplish. Grounding is tricky business- you just can't ground everything anywhere you can and get it right; you must follow the rules....27 pages of them in the 2002 NEC.

I have a question for this portable generator. Is this portable generator listed for use for stand by power? Or only cord connections?

FC: There is no listing for portable generators, only stationary.
