Horizontally-mounted receptacle ?

Is it OK to mount a receptacle on a horizontal surface? Specifically I am considering the horizontal surface of a fireplace mantle. A non-operable fireplace.

Yes it's OK. I think there is a rule against horizontal mounting in a kitchen countertop. But a mantle is OK, even if the fireplace works. :wink:

Art 551 for RV's is what Charlie is referencing. Along with 406.4(E) for dwelling unit countertops and similar work surfaces.

I would use the floor type rec. that has a cover that closes when not in use to keep dust and things from falling in rec.

Why not just use some cheap childproof caps? It would accomplish the same thing for less money.

Then you'd be in a very small minority. There's about a ba-jillion ordinary face up receptacles on top of mantles out there. Very popular installation method in the 60's and 70's.

I was going to say something but now I understand what everyone is saying by horizontal. I thought you meant horizontal, not face up. I have mounted receptacles in the back splash of counters in the horizontal position but never face up. Ya'll had me worried there.

oooooohhhh. gotcha. i was talking about horizontal in backsplashes also. i really thought barbeer had gone nuts, and wasn't quite sure how to say it yet.
