Would anyone agree that emt is o.k. in a horse stable and arena area. Under 547, it says...or other cables or raceways suitable for the location. I would think it would be fine? I've been told by the owner that other bidders say it is not acceptable by NEC. I would not think this environment is corrosive. They area attached and completely enclosed. The stable area has a forced air furnace.

Obviously a AHJ call. In this area the most common answer would be "no EMT"

I wire horse barns with EMT, but if there is going to be any raceway exposed to horse urine or horse poo, it should be PVC. The waste products from any large animal will rot the EMT right off.

They could bite thru pvc

M.D. would probably be correct based on the link. I will check with the inspectors on Monday, was hoping to respond to the owner this weekend. The owner asked for it to be bid in Emt as she thought Mice would eat thru the Pvc. Didn't argue, based on my original post.

Thanks for the input

I've seen horses kind rear up and kick things. That potentially could fall under "subject to severe physical damage," depending on one's interpretation of that phrase. If it's 1/2" or 3/4", I would just go with IMC to err or on the side of safety.

I think the more appropriate question is ,..

Have you ever seen what a horse can do to a horse barn or arena?

I would not use EMT anywhere that a horse can reach and I would not use it at all where they are stabled,.. I have seen it ,and it rots,. some as high as eight feet from the floor . I think the higher up rot has to do the the high numbers of birds and critters that use the pipes as perches and or highways leaving lots of waste as they do .

this guy seems to agree that a more substantial form of wiring method is a better choice ,...I'm not sure what a "free stall barn" is though.

2. Can I use EMT thinwall conduit in a free stall barn?
Panel Response:

Nothing in Article 358 would prohibit the use of EMT in a free stall barn.

Yes,
But! 358.12(1) It is not a code violation, My opinion not a good idea.

The NEC does permit EMT except where subject to Severe Physical Damage. One of my

inspectors raised Race horses and he said you really don?t want to put any electrical where a

horse can kick or reach it or they will tear it up. So I would recommend no electrical period but if
it cannot be avoided use IMC or RMC
