Is there anything against code if I were to put the GFCI breaker in the panel and use an air conditioner style disconnect outside for the hot tub?

The reason for this is I happen to have a 50A GFCI breaker and spa disconnects are hard to find at the moment where I live.

Just make sure that the disconnect is installed at least 5' away from the inside walls of the hot tub. IMO, it's always best to have the GFCI device outdoors near the hot tub simply because if it trips, your customer won't like having to go through the house to the garage to reset the device.

Garage isn't all that bad, but here often the panel is in a basement.

And if you find it tripped chances are it has cooled off and you aren't getting in anyway until it is warmed up again, or in many cases been repaired because there is a good reason it has tripped.
