well what does 44 apply for then. Shall we just eliminate it. If they say shall have, then you gotta provide.

I think it applies to spas and hot tubs indoors and that outdoor hot tubs and spas have otherwise been provided for.

Ruwired If I were to wire an outdoor hot tub why would I ever look at 680.44 ,.. 680.42 does not send me there it sends me to parts I and II

MD we always have to read the entire article when installing equipment.

Your hung up on 680.42(A)2 saying...
(2) Cord-and-Plug Connections Cord-and-plug connections with a cord not longer than 4.6 m (15 ft) shall be permitted where protected by a ground-fault circuit interrupter.
But it does'nt say anything about if its hard wired.Thats why we gotta read the rest of the article. When we get to 44, it says we gotta provide.

I have never not protected a pool pump or a hot tub and I think you have made a good arguement ,...I need to digest this a bit and read a little more.

Thanks Ruwired , for helping me see it. 680.44 would apply to a hot tub outside . (imagine an embarassed smily )

GFCI or no GFCI

GFCI or no GFCI

is it hard wired ? no gfi needed
if you plug it in ...gfi needed

The above is Not quite an accurate statement>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Article 90 mandates that the inspector SHALL insure compliance with the UL listing....As well as the manufactures installation requirements; and most hot tubs now have a label that says they must be connected to a GFCI circuit wired with CU only.

You can wire the equipment right and still be wrong...

Turnabout is fair play: Article 90 doesn't say that.

110.3(B) does. ;)

Welcome to the forum. :)

I have installed many of these outdoor units and have never ever seen a set of manufaturers instructions that said anything other than must have gfci protection. My understanding of the code says that they all require it as wel. no hotub or spa we have ever installed in any or our myriad inspection jurisdictions would ever accept an install without gfci protection. Hmmm lets see i wanna jump in a pool of water that is being circulated by and electric motor driven pump which may just have a winding that is partially grounded? Not enuf to trip a breaker but leaking current into the water neverthless? The guy that never has put a gfci on on of these can jump in there if he wants,NOT ME!!!

Stew would you jump in a pool without GFCI protection for the pump ,..I bet you already have, and it is perfectly acceptable.

GFCI protection will be required in 2008 NEC for all pool pumps.
